5 steps to get “Fit”
I have this conversation on a daily basis.
Me “So what are your goals?”
Client “I want to be fitter”
Me “Awesome, what do you mean by fitter?”
Client “I’m not sure, I just want to feel like I can do more and not get puffed out”
Me “That’s great, but what does that look like? Do you mean when you run, when you ride, when you’re doing padwork?”
…
There are a tonne of people out there that wish to be “Fit” & “Healthy” & “Strong” & “Lean”.
Well, pretty much everyone wants at least one of those things.
The challenge is, that none of them are achievable goals.
I don’t mean you can’t become “Healthy”.
What I mean is:
What is healthy?
What is it to you? What does health in your world look like?
The same with fitness.
Because I might classify “fit” as someone who can run a marathon in under 3 hours. Or a world champion CrossFitter or a Professional fighter. But those things might not have any relevance to you, your life or your perception of “fit”.
And because of this, so many people just float around the fitness industry with not much clue, not much growth and end up with not much “fitness”.
So here are 5 things that you can do to make sure that you get “FITTER”.
Have a goal.
If you just follow the last 4 of these tips, you’ll get fitter. That I can promise you.
What I can’t promise you is where that fitness will reach it’s limits, your risk of injury, or whether or not you’ll achieve a level of fitness that you actually want.
Not until you define it in some way.
If you’re starting out it doesn’t have to be a big goal. It doesn’t have to be about running a marathon. It could be as simple as running for 5kms without stopping.
If you can not do that now, and you start training and in 6 or 12 weeks time, you achieve it. Then you have become “Fitter” and that fitness is now in line with how you want to grow.
Fitness is so broad and varied, that there is no 1 way to define it. It’s an impossible task.
So when you say I want to be “fitter” you’re asking yourself to complete something that is impossible.
The simplest way to change your goals from impossible to possible, is to set something that works within your vision of the “fitness” that you would like to achieve.
Big or small, it doesn’t matter.
Start with a specific goal and as you achieve your goals, you’ll be able to direct your training in the way that you want.
Which will make the journey 100x simpler.
If you’re struggling to find a goal, take a look at our Level UP fitness events. They’re designed to give people of all levels a chance to reach a new level of fitness.
Get educated
Once you have your goal or goals. It’s time to get educated.
We live in a world where literally every piece of information is available to us.
That means, you have access to the best minds and knowledge on any topic you want to learn about.
In this case, you have the ability to research and implement the best way to achieve your goal.
Most people just say “i’m going to join the gym”.
They haven’t got a specific goal in mind. They haven’t got any clue on how to achieve this “fitness” thing and they expect it all to just fall into place.
It won’t work.
If you don’t have the means, the want or the time to do some of your own research, find a great coach or mentor and listen and learn from them.
Be a great student and you’ll get there. Without a doubt.
Work hard
Fitness is hard work.
That’s the plain and simple truth.
So many people want to lift light weights, get on a treadmil and go for a brisk walk and expect the body fat to drop, the muscles to pop and the fitness to soar.
That’s never going to happen.
If that’s what you think, you’re just going to be disappointed.
You need to sweat, you need to burn, you need to hurt, you need to create a stimulus on your body that it’s not used to. Otherwise it won’t change.
Fitness is just your bodies way of adapting to a new environment or requirement to live.
So if your body doesn’t feel the need to change to handle the training you’re doing, then your body will not change.
Be prepared to put in the work, be prepared to deal with the muscle burn, be prepared to become a sweaty mess and be prepared to EARN YOUR REWARD.
Be consistent
This isn’t a rule for fitness, it’s a rule for life.
If you’re not consistent, you won’t achieve anything.
When it comes to fitness, strength, etc. Your body needs that hard work stimulus on a regular basis for it to adapt.
It needs to think that this is now the world that it lives in and if it doesn’t change, it won’t survive.
Especially if you want to reap the long term health benefits of being fit.
You need to do it regularly (3+ times per week), and you need to do it ongoing.
If your goals change or you achieve them and want to make them bigger, then you just change the way you train.
But you always stay consistent.
Set another goal
This is how you create a long term, fitness based lifestyle.
Keep setting yourself goals. Keep moving forward.
Once you reach the first goal you set, work on a new one.
Some will be MASSIVE, other will be tiny.
It could even be to stay consistent during a hard time in your life for mental clarity.
The size or type of the goal is not important.
What is important is that you have something that you’re moving towards.
